Our Aim: At Waikiki PS we aim to create confident, self-motivated, empowered learners who have an instilled appreciation of the power of mathematic reasoning. We aim to ensure that students employ mathematics to make informed, reasoned decisions and solve problems efficiently and to ensure that our students can recognise connections and continue their mathematical exploration beyond their time at Waikiki PS.
Our Plan: The Mathematics plan outlines our approach to teaching and learning in Mathematics at Waikiki PS. The plan provides guidance to teachers to make professional judgments in achieving a balance between explicit instruction, engaging hands on experiences, investigations, abstract thought processes and problem solving with ample opportunity for repeated practice and consolidation of knowledge, skills and understandings.
Our school uses WAC, EYLF and the Waikiki PS Scope and Sequence across the school. It is important that mathematics lessons are reinforced with opportunities to apply concepts in unfamiliar and authentic contexts, to practice and experience using a range of resources and to develop mathematical skills and fluency across all content and proficiency strands.

Music: The Waikiki Primary School Music program is led by passionate musician and educator, Miss Amanda Oliver. Students are exposed to a dynamic and rich West Australian Music Curriculum experience that is engaging and fun.
Students are encouraged to meet their creative and expressive potential through making music through singing, movement, playing classroom percussion instruments and the widely popular classroom ukulele program. Strategies from the Musical Futures program endorsed by Sting are used at Waikiki to get students playing familiar, well liked songs to a modified score.
Students not only express themselves musically but respond to the music of others in various settings. Students draw upon their own cultural traditions and experiences to learn about those of others. Learning through the arts at Waikiki encourages students to understand themselves and the world around them in a meaningful and culturally respectful way with regular links to Rockingham’s and Australia’s indigenous heritage.
The Instrumental School of Music Guitar students are selected as part of the Music Gifted and Talented Program. They receive weekly small group tuition and performance opportunities in year 6 currently and from year 5 from 2020. This opportunity follows guitarists through high school where students will enter ensemble and band performances.
Performance opportunities for all students include assemblies, West Australian Government Music Society shows, School fete and More.
Physical Education: In term 3 Junior Years (P-3) are looking at the skill of throwing underarm and overarm with accuracy, in middle and upper years (4—6) we are practicing our ball striking through cricket. We will also be preparing for the cross country carnival through morning runners club and in Block Sport we are focusing on getting ourselves ready for the Term 4 faction carnival.
Science: At Waikiki Primary our specialist science program promotes investigation and inquiry based learning. Students engage in four scientific strands each year – Biological, Physical, Chemical and Earth and Space Science. This term in science we are studying Biological Science, the science of living things, and next term we will move on to Physical science. This term we are studying a large range of animals, plants, and even have pet snails and an axolotl in the classroom. Other classrooms Outside of the classroom we also have gardening club once a week and the science fair in week 8. As well as learning within the different scientific areas, students are developing a range of Science Inquiry Skills and fostering an enjoyment of scientific investigation. We hold an annual Science Fair which students of all ages can participate in, this is a great opportunity to explore and engage the skills we are learning.
L.O.T.E: At Waikiki Primary School our specialist language program is Indonesian and is taught by our specialist language teacher, Ibu Marianne da Cruz. Students from Year 1 to Year 6 engage in Indonesian lessons for one hour per week using the KETAWA online Indonesian Language learning program produced by the Department of Education WA. The program is designed for students in Western Australia and is aligned to the Western Australian Languages – Indonesian curriculum.
The WA Languages – Indonesian curriculum allows our students to develop communication skills in the Indonesian language, an understanding of the role of language and culture in communication and a capability for reflection on language use and language learning.
Students learning a second language in primary school benefit from a deeper understanding of their first language plus an increase in memory and brain function. It also helps them to explore and recognise their own cultural identities as they come to understand those of the language being learnt. Learning a language enhances literacy skills, helps develop critical thinking and problem solving skills, fosters respect and understanding of other cultures and has been found to improve the overall performance at school. Learning to communicate in another language challenges children to discover more about how other people live, and opens their mind up to different cultures and ways of life
Students attend each of these specialist programs throughout each week.
