Community Member

As a community member, I value the opportunity to contribute to the school and support its continued growth and success. With more than 30 years of experience as a sales professional, I bring strong commercial acumen combined with a genuine people-focused approach and understanding of the importance of relationships and collaboration.

I initially joined the School Board after being approached by parents within the school community. During COVID, I also had the opportunity to get to know the Administration Team and saw firsthand the dedication and commitment they showed to students and families. This encouraged me to become involved and contribute in a meaningful way.

I believe the School Board plays a vital role in providing strong leadership and governance, while also helping to strategically plan for the future of the school. One of my key priorities is supporting Waikiki Primary School in becoming a destination school that families actively choose for their children.

I hope to contribute to the future of the school by supporting all stakeholders and working together to create the best possible outcomes for students.

Amanda Barrett

Staff Representative

My name is Amanda Barrett, and I have proudly been a staff member at Waikiki Primary School since 2006, when I began my teaching career as a graduate teacher. Over the past two decades, I have developed extensive experience in Early Childhood Education, teaching across Kindergarten, Pre-Primary and Junior Primary year levels. Throughout my career, I have also held specialist roles supporting students at educational risk and currently work as the Play Leader and Small Group Tuition/Intervention Coordinator. In addition to my teaching qualifications, I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Community Development and Sociology and recently achieved Senior Teacher Level 1 status.

I have been a member of the School Board since October 2023. My connection to Waikiki Primary School extends beyond my professional role, as I have also been a resident of the Harrington Waters community since 2007. This unique perspective allows me to contribute to the Board as both a staff member and a community representative, bringing a balanced understanding of the needs and aspirations of our school community.

My decision to join the School Board was driven by my passion for Waikiki Primary School and my strong commitment to the local community. As a long-standing staff member and one of the original teachers involved in the school’s “Schools in Houses” model, I wanted the opportunity to contribute directly to the decisions and initiatives that shape the future of our school. I believe the School Board plays a vital role in bringing together staff, families, students and the wider community to ensure we share a clear vision for the school’s ongoing growth and success.

As a Board Member, my priority is to support continuous improvement across the school while always keeping student outcomes at the centre of every decision. I am committed to maintaining high standards of professionalism and governance and ensuring that all Board decisions reflect the best interests of the entire school community. My experience as both a staff member and local resident enables me to provide valuable insight into the needs of our students, families and community.

One of the things I value most about Waikiki Primary School is its strong sense of community and family connection. Since I first joined the school in 2006, I have always appreciated the welcoming and supportive culture that exists here. This strong community spirit, which I believe stems from the school’s unique history and traditions, continues to be one of the school’s greatest strengths.

Looking ahead, I hope to continue strengthening the connections between the School Board, the school and the wider Waikiki community. I am committed to ensuring that every decision we make supports improved outcomes for students and contributes to the ongoing growth, success and positive reputation of Waikiki Primary School.

Outside of school, I am a passionate soccer mum. Much of my spare time is spent supporting my son, who is a state-level soccer player, travelling to games and training sessions and cheering him on from the sidelines each weekend.

Parent Representative

My name is Amber Alexander, and I am a Parent Representative on the Waikiki Primary School Board. I joined the Board six months ago to become more involved in the school community and contribute to the positive environment that supports our children. My child is currently in Pre-Primary, and since joining the school community, I have developed a strong appreciation for the connections between staff, parents, and students that make Waikiki Primary School such a welcoming and supportive place.

Professionally, I am a psychologist and teaching academic with expertise in child safety and childhood trauma. Through my experience, I have developed a strong understanding of the importance of creating environments where children feel safe, valued, and supported. I was motivated to join the School Board because I believe my background can help contribute to a school community that places children at the centre of decision-making and celebrates each child’s unique strengths and individuality.

I believe one of the most important roles of the School Board is to ensure accountability, strengthen partnerships between the school and families, and provide opportunities for parents to advocate for the wellbeing and needs of all students. As a relatively new member of the Board, one of my key priorities is to support and enhance child safety practices while continuing to build strong connections within the school community.

What I value most about Waikiki Primary School is its strong sense of community. Despite its size, it feels like a close-knit network of parents, staff, and students working together to help children thrive. It has been wonderful to watch my child and their peers have their interests, personalities, and strengths recognised and celebrated within the classroom and across the school.

Looking ahead, I hope to use my professional experience in psychology, research, and child safety to contribute to a school environment that values the whole child. While academic success is important, I believe student wellbeing, safety, and belonging are equally vital in helping children reach their full potential.

Outside of my professional and Board roles, I am a passionate sports fan and have travelled interstate more than a dozen times to support the Perth Glory. On occasion, I have even dyed my hair purple for the weekend to show my team spirit!

Anna Thompson

Parent Representative

I am Anna Thompson and I am a Parent Representative on the School Board. Although I have only recently joined the Board, having been involved for around two months, I am excited to have the opportunity to contribute to the school community in a meaningful way. I am a parent of children in Pre-Primary and Year 4 and my family has proudly been part of the Waikiki community for the past nine years.

Professionally, I work in events management and coordination within the disability and aged care sectors, with experience in Human Resources and Training. I am also a Pilates Instructor. My professional background has given me strong communication, organisation, and people-focused skills that I hope to bring to my role on the School Board.

I was motivated to join the School Board and now with greater flexibility in my current work, I have the opportunity to become more engaged in both my children’s school life and the wider school community.

I believe the School Board plays an important role in supporting the school to provide a safe, positive, and high-quality learning environment for all students. As a Board Member, my priorities are to support positive student outcomes, encourage strong communication between the school and families, and help foster a safe and inclusive environment for everyone.

What I value most about our school community is the commitment to creating an inclusive and accessible environment where all children have the opportunity to feel they belong and can thrive. Looking to the future, I hope to contribute by supporting positive decision-making and ensuring that students’ needs remain at the centre of everything we do.
